Find the measurement basis
First identify whether the table reports values per 100 g, per serving, or on another basis. Do not compare two numbers until their basis and units match.
Separate energy from macronutrients
Energy is commonly shown in kilocalories. Protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fibre may be shown in grams or percentages. Preserve the exact unit shown instead of treating percentages and grams as interchangeable.
- Energy: check kcal and basis
- Protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fibre: check g or %
- Serving size: confirm the amount used for the table
Read mineral values with their units
Historical records include fields such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and zinc for some products. Milligrams and grams differ by a factor of one thousand, so the printed unit is essential.
Treat front-of-pack phrases separately
A front-panel phrase does not replace the nutrition table, ingredient list, allergen declaration, or professional advice. Claims such as high fibre, protein, gluten free, low glycaemic index, or no added sugar require product-specific substantiation and compliant wording.
Use the received pack as the final reference
If a website value and received label differ, pause the comparison and contact support with the product, batch details, and photographs. Do not silently choose whichever value appears more favourable.
